Raising concerns over the quality of sports events and lack of competition in Gujarat University, a former GU Senate member and mountaineer has alleged malpractice in the running of sports.

Nikunj Balar, who is associated with sports activity in GU, has also raised questions over spending of money garnered from sports fees on office bearers of university’s sports committee. He said that the varsity collects Rs 4 from all students as sports fee, and asks participants of sports com petitions to get their own equipment and gear for tournaments.

Selection irregularities alleged Balar also alleged irregularities in selection of candidates claiming that students were chosen on the basis of certificates and other credentials and not practical sports skills. This will probably be the first time that such a selection is done for a national competition. In the swimming competition, many of those related to office-bearers were selected in absence of competition, he said.

Balar also alleged that in competitions like football, teams were made to play two games in a day. This can be very taxing for students. But the GU’s sports commit- tee just wants to be done with the event rather than having a proper sports com- petition, he claimed.

He also said that while students are asked to bring their gear like cricket balls and shuttlecocks, faculty members give themselves new blazers each worth Rs 3,000. They spend Rs 1.80 lakh on it while students struggle. They also go to places like Mount Abu and spend Rs 1.5 lakh on a work shop, but do not spend on students, he said.

Ramesh Chaudhary, chairman of the sports committee, said that allegations are baseless. The selection was done as we were asked to hold the competition in two days and it is not possible to do a pan-Gujarat competition in two days. The workshop in Abu was two years back and it was after the authorities’ mandated it, he said.
