The police prevented the attempts of BJP activists to hoist the national flag at the controversial Jinnah tower here on Wednesday.

Some activists went to the Jinnah tower, located in the heart of the city and tried to unfurl the national flag but the police prevented their attempt and whisked them away.

The Jinnah tower was constructed before Independence as a memorial to the visit of Mohammad Ali Jinnah to Guntur town.

The BJP recently demanded the government to change the name of the Jinnah tower as Abdul Kalam tower. The BJP leaders also threatened to demolish the tower if the name was not changed. In the wake of the threat, the Guntur municipal corporation erected a security fence around the tower and set up a police post.

GVL Narasimha Rao in social media on Wednesday said In Srinagar’s Lal Chowk, Indian flag is hoisted with pride today but in AP’s Guntur town, YCP government is not allowing unfurling of India flag on ‘Jinnah Tower’. Do you consider Muslims in Guntur less patriotic or you (Chief Minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy) are using even this to appease Muslims”
