A 22-year-old student of Nirma University died after falling into the Narmada canal at Adalaj while attempting to save a girl student who had slipped into it. Four MBA students had gone there for an outing during rains on Thursday. Mayank Rathod (22), native of MP, had gone to Narmada Canalalong with friends Deepak Solanki, Yagni and Sanchit Israni. Two of them, Yagni and Deepak Solanki, crossed a barrier and sat on a slab when the two slipped and fell in the canal. The area down below was wet and slippery due to the rains while the current in the canal was also high,” a police officer told Mirror. Mayank attempted to help Yagni by throwing his jacket towards her. However, she could not reach it and slipped further. Others rushed to get help from nearby. While Yagni and Deepak managed to reach the bank, Mayank was carried away by the swirling waters, the Adalaj police said.
The body was recovered from the canal on Friday night.”Mayank’s parents came to Ahmedabad after they learnt of the incident. They took the body to Ujjain for last rites,” a friend who was at the police station told Mirror. Gandhinagar Chief Fire Officer Mahesh Mod said, “One of the four died by slipping and falling in the canal.” Adalaj police registered a case of accidental death.
