The AMC over the weekend approved the contract to appoint Rajesh Bhatt as Chief Fire Officer (CFO) for one year. Bhatt retired from the service on Monday.

But the AMC did not deem it fit to grant him promotion as CFO despite Bhatt serving as the in charge CFO for a year after the retirement of MF Dastoor.Sometimes bureaucrats are promoted to a post on the last day of service.

Mayor Kirit Parmar on the appointment and lack of promotion to Baht, but he remained unavailable for comment.


Bhatt who has 37 years of service to his credit was actively involved in the rescue operations following the three aircraft crashes, the devastating earthquake of January 26, 2001, the Gujarat riots of 2002 and innumerable floods, industrial disasters and fire incidents in high-rises in the city.

He led a team of 61 firemen and officers during the 2008 Kosi Dam disaster in Bihar, rescuing 1,172 people from inundated areas in an 18-hour-long operation. Bhatt and his team won accolades from the people of Araria district in Bihar.
