Gujarat on Thursday reported 24,485 new Covid cases, the highest single day spike so far and in fact, 10,000 more cases than the second Covid wave peak in 2021.
The state had reported 14,605 cases on April 30, 2021 at the peak of the second wave.
Ahmedabad city reported 9,837 new cases, followed by 2,981 new cases in Surat city, 2,823 cases in Vadodara city and 1,333 in Rajkot city. There were 728 cases in rural Surat, 558 in Anand, 529 in Bhavnagar city and 509 cases in Gandhinagar city. There were 371 cases in Jamnagar city.
There were 446 cases in Valsad and 408 in Bharuch, 371 in rural Vadodara, 354 in Mehsana and 346 in Kutch. Other districts reported cases below 300.
There were 13 Covid deaths reported in Gujarat on Thursday, a new high in the third wave. The deaths were 7 in Ahmedabad city, 2 in Surat city, and 1 each in Jamnagar city, rural Gandhinagar, ru ral Rajkot and Kheda.
This took the official death toll to 81 in January 10,199 and till date. There were 1,04,888 active cases in Gujarat, crossing the 1 lakh barrier for the first time this year. Of these, 156 were on ventilators while 1,04,732 patients were in stable condition.
The AMC on Thursday added 41 new micro-containment areas in the city and removed 14, leaving the city with 131 active quarantine zones. Major among these were 32 houses with 108 people in Ashmita society in Khokhra.
