According to the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA), the President approved conferment of 128 Padma Awards, including two duo cases, this year on the occasion of Republic Day In a duo case, the award is counted as one. The list comprises 4 Padma Vibhushan, 17 Padma Bhushan and 107 Padma Shri awards.
Those from Gujarat whose names were announced for the Padma awards include:
Gandhian Maljibhai Desai who worked for the upliftment of backward classes by setting up ashram shalas, hostels and was also active in the cooperative sector.
Swami Sachidanand received the award for Literature and Education in Gujarat. A Vedantacharya from Varanasi Sanskrit University, he works for welfare of downtrodden.
Dr Lata Desai (80) has won Padma Shri in the field of Medicine. She started SEWA rural and dedicated her life towards holistic, integrated well-being of tribal communities in Gujarat in the field of health, women empowerment, education and poverty alleviation. since 1980. Khalil Dhantejvi (posthumously) was also awarded Padma Shri for Literature and Education. Surat diamond merchant Savaji Dholakia was awarded for Saudi Work. Gamit Ramilaben Raising Bhai and her team have been responsible for constructing good quality sanitation units in villages, an achievement which has been highly appreciated by the community. Considering that most homes in the region are situated on hilly terrain and scattered, it was difficult to carry construction material. However, the SHG prepared a list of beneficiaries and enlisted their support in construction work. With 67 sanitation units complete, the team plans to construct another 380 units.
