The Department of Legal Metrology penalised 40 medical stores across the state and collected a fine of Rs 5 lakh from them for charging exorbitant rates for essential medical items including masks, sanitisers, oximeters and thermometers from customers and flouting the packaging norms. Controller, Legal Metrology and Director Consumer Affairs had received complaints from people of medical stores overcharging during the corona pandemic.

Chandresh Kotak, Controller, Legal Metrology, said, those who cheat customers need to be afraid of the law. We have conducted a drive to ensure that the norms of the department are followed and customers are not cheated.

The department had conducted a statewide drive this week to nab those responsible and penalise them. As per the Package Commodity Rules, 2011 the store owners can’t sell the products more than the amount of MRP and they have to mention details of the products on the package. These include name of product, manufacturing date, MRP, best before date, name and address of manufacturer and contact details.
