The Gujarat government has received close to 90,000 applications seeking compensation for Covid deaths even as the official Covid fatalities stand at 10,094.

Of the total 89,633 claims for Covid compensation, 68,370 have been approved while 4,234 were rejected due to various reasons. Among the total approved claims, 58,840 applicants have been compensated. The figures were furnished by the state government in the Supreme Court in connection with a petition concerning ex-gratia compensation for Covid deaths across the country.

The Covid compensation claim numbers have given credence to the allegations made by the Opposition and critics that the actual Covid deaths in the state are much higher than the official numbers. Earlier, the government had defended the Covid death figures (based on the number of applications for compensation) stating that it was higher because of the broader definition of Covid death set by the Supreme Court to benefit the kin of the deceased.

The issue reached the Supreme Court after lawyer Amit Panchal moved the apex court against a notification of the Gujarat government that made seeking Covid compensation as per the SC order a complex process.
